How Dental Implants Revive Toothless Smiles
Want to replace your missing teeth? Then it’s time to consider getting dental implants in West Allis, WI.
If you have missing teeth, you may feel embarrassed to show off your smile and may shy away from social functions or it might be more difficult to enjoy your favorite foods. Luckily, our West Allis dentist Dr. Jeffrey Welnak can change all that with dental implants.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant looks like a small metal post or screw that is placed into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth’s roots. An implant is designed to function just like tooth roots and supports dental crowns and other restorations. Your West Allis general dentist may recommend getting dental implants if you need to replace one or more missing teeth and you are in good health.
How do implants work?
There are three parts that make up this restoration:
- The implant: the metal piece that is surgically placed into the jawbone
- The abutment: an attachment that screws to the top of the implant and connects the dental crown with the implant
- The dental restoration: This is part of the implant that is visible. A dental crown may be cemented over the abutment to replace a single tooth or multiple implants can be placed into the jawbone to support a dental bridge or a complete set of dentures.
First the implant will be surgically placed into the jawbone where over the course of a couple months the bone and tissue surrounding it will begin to heal and fuse together with the implant.
Once the implant and the bone have fused, another surgical procedure is performed to uncover the top of the implant and screw on the abutment. Once the gums surrounding the implant are given a couple more weeks to heal then the dental crown or other restoration can be cemented over the abutment.
